| ROAR! Pine Dragon faces the Rock Scorpion! |
Estimated Completion Time: 1-2 hours.
Materials for basic piece:
- clay, paper mache, or paper and tape base
- approximately two quarts of pine cone scales
- hot glue and glue gun, or wood or super glue
- plant thorns (for teeth or back spines)
- lichen (for dragon "beards" and tail fluff)
- dead leaves (for inner mouth or wings)
- mica (for shiny scales, teeth, or eyes)
- bark or stones (for a ground base)
- buttons or beads (for eyes)
The Base:
To make the base for the dragon, I used paper and tape to make my dragon's form by making simple shapes and putting them together. For a sturdier piece, paper mache or clay may work better. However, they are probably more breakable-my paper based sculptures are still holding up after a few falls.
The Scales:
The pine-scales can be used in thee ways. If you glue at the rounded part, the scales will form spikes, which are great for hedgehogs. If you glue at the pointed end, you will have rounded scales that stick up. If you cut off the pointed end, you can have fish scales. If you use the fish scale method, work from bottom to top, layering over each row in a fish scale pattern. If you use the other methods, work from head to toe, gluing each piece under the previous.
Personalization:
This craft can be done in so many ways-make it the way you want to! You can make a western dragon, eastern dragon, with no arms or four legs! Wings or not, long tail or stubby one. Do you want it fierce, or cute? That's for you to decide!
